Eucalyptus in the sauna: scent and breathing

Navy-ink engraving on aged parchment: eucalyptus and a small bottle in front of a sauna with a door on the left, a steaming heater and a woman on the right-hand bench.

Eucalyptus in the sauna has a sharp, green scent that can make the hot air feel surprisingly fresh. In a saunagus, the gusmester adds essential oil to the water poured on the stones, then moves the scented heat around the room with a towel. You might feel as though your nose has more room. That feeling is real as an experience, but it does not mean the scent has cleared your airways.

What eucalyptus brings to a hot room

Your skin feels the heat while the scent seems cool and brisk in your nose. Then warm air reaches your face and shoulders. You need not name the oil to notice it.

Some of our gusmesters choose to blend eucalyptus with peppermint for certain sessions. Together, the scents can feel fresh in the nose, as though breathing comes more easily. What feels bright to one guest may feel strong to another.

Some of our gusmesters also use menthol crystals for a sharper cool feeling. The gusmester prepares them and guides that part of the round. Breathe slowly and comfortably, without forcing a deep inhale. Our guide to sauna oils places eucalyptus alongside mint and menthol in the fresh family.

Why your breathing may feel different

A strong scent draws your attention to each breath. With eucalyptus, some people describe a feeling of clearer passage through the nose. The useful distinction is between feeling freer and measuring more airflow. A small study comparing vapours including eucalyptus found that participants reported a cooler nose and improved airflow sensation, while measurements of nasal resistance did not change. The researchers did not study saunagus, so their result cannot predict what will happen to you on a hot bench. Read the study on nasal sensation and airflow.

Another experiment tested several odours, though not eucalyptus, and found that smell can alter the feeling of an open nose without changing measured peak nasal airflow. It helps explain why a scent can be convincing without being a treatment. It does not establish a benefit from eucalyptus steam in a sauna. Read the odour and nasal patency study.

Let the scent be a scent. Breathe comfortably, through your nose or mouth. There is no need to take deeper breaths to get more of the oil. Our breathing guide explains the cues you may hear in a hot round.

A familiar medicine, a different setting

Eucalyptus also appears in medicinal products for coughs associated with colds. The European Medicines Agency describes that use as traditional use, based on a long history rather than strong clinical trial evidence. It notes that studies of swallowed 1,8-cineole, a constituent of eucalyptus oil, do not directly establish the effects of eucalyptus oil medicines. A formulated medicine used as directed is different from the scent of eucalyptus oil shared in a sauna. Neither the medicine assessment nor those capsule studies prove that a scented gus relieves congestion, treats asthma or helps a cold. Read the EMA's eucalyptus oil assessment.

We use eucalyptus for the experience it brings to a round, not as a remedy. If you are unwell or cannot safely tolerate the heat, follow our behaviour policy and stay out of the sauna. Tell staff if you feel dizzy or unwell during a session.

You share the air with everyone else

Only the gusmester handles the oils in a Heat Harmony session. Our rules prohibit personal essential oils and similar products because they can affect shared air quality and damage the sauna oven. Please leave your own bottle outside the sauna, even if it is the same scent you have enjoyed elsewhere.

You do not have to sit through a scent that feels too strong. Move to a lower bench or step out. If you leave during a round, wait for it to finish before returning. A scent can be pleasant to someone beside you and overwhelming to you.

Questions about eucalyptus in saunagus

Does eucalyptus open your airways?

It may make breathing feel clearer, but that is different from showing an actual change in airflow. The vapour study above measured no reduction in nasal resistance. It also took place outside a sauna, so we do not turn it into a claim about a gus.

Can eucalyptus cure a cold in the sauna?

No treatment claim follows from smelling it during a session. The EMA's traditional-use assessment concerns specific medicinal preparations and uses, not sauna vapour. If you feel unwell, our house rule is to stay out of the sauna.

Is eucalyptus used in every gus?

The gusmester chooses the scents for each session. If eucalyptus is the one you hope to smell, ask the team what is planned, while allowing for the selection to change.

May I bring my own eucalyptus oil?

No. Personal oils are prohibited under our behaviour policy. The gusmester supplies and administers the products used in the session.

What if the scent is too intense?

Sit lower or leave the room. You can leave at any point, and you can ask staff for help. Our FAQ covers the other practical house rules.

Come for the scent, stay at your own pace

If a gentler pace sounds right, read about Relaxed Gus. The scents still depend on the gusmester, and you can decide how each round feels once you are there. See current prices and find a session when you are ready.
